Tello altitude control

Hi, I am planning to do 3D path planning project with Tello drone.

My question is how tello calculate altitude. If it uses tof sensor that calculate relative distance, I think it goes up when tello fly above object.

How tello calculate the distance when it is controlled with python? Is it relative distance from whatever object under tello or distance from the initial point?
