New drone owner, always wanted a drone, but wanted a real one to begin with that could lead to better ones once mastered. Online reviews recommended the Tello if you could find one as its been discontinued. Found one online in sealed box that fit my budget, bought it for myself for Christmas. Now investigating controller so I don't have to use my phone. Will be looking to repurpose a Samsung Galaxy 4 as a controller. Might be on here often looking for help.

I would stay away from the Gamesir controllers. I have a T1D and the sticks have gone bad. Even when centred the Tello is getting input that the stick is being pushed forward. Calibration via the T1D upgrade tool does not work. TelloFpv’s dead zone setting does help a bit but there is still drift. This is a known problem with the Gamesir controller.

I have been using my son’s Xbox controller with TelloFpv and it works great.

Fully agree!
Gamesirs are known for exceptionally bad quality gimbals. The only reason to buy a Gamesir is to avoid the use of TelloFpv. Otherwise any console controller makes much more sense.

Thank you for the input. I am not a gamer so I am getting a crash course on the controller lingo. I don't want to use a phone as the controller, I want to use a game controller wired to a phone (android Google pixel 2)as I believe the fpv will help me learn to fly and control without worrying about orientation. I'm thinking a gamesir t3s with phone holder is the type of setup that would work. The varied opinions on the gamesir makes me pause. Is there another controller(s) that is more reliable at that price point that I should consider?

If you can...I don't know how...sorry...but look on FB market ...you will find something cheap

Controllers are a minefield.

For Android:
Using the Ryze app you are locked into Gamesir T1D or T1S. No other gamepad works - unless you add mappers like Octopus.
Gamesir T1D does not work via USB, only wireless via BT (Bluetooth LE that is).
Gamesir T1S works via USB or Bluetooth LE. BTLE is preferrable over "normal" BT as it causes less video interference compared to normal BT. But there is still a signifcant amount of video garbage caused by BTLE.
Both Gamesir models have low quality gimbals. I have a handful here and they all have developed stick drift over time.

TelloFpv Android supports Parrot Flypad, Gamesir T1s / T1d and any gamepad that is compatible with Android (wired or wireless). Just read the amazon reviews to get a feel which ones are OK.
USB wired gives better video than wireless gamepad controllers.

For IOS:
I am not sure what the Ryze IOS app supports beside Gamesir T1D and T1S.

TelloFpv IOS supports Parrot Flypad, Gamesir T1s and T1d, and any gamepad that is MFI compatible. Can be wired or wireless, again wireless gives more video interference

Parrot flypad uses a Bluetooth LE protocol similar to Gamesir and causes similar level of video interference. Better than ordinary bluetooth, worse than wired USB.
Flypad does not work via USB (actually it does but only for a few seconds).

It comes with a phone holder and has better ergonomics and precision gimbals giving better control.

The main drawback: It works only with Parrot drones - and Tello but only if using TelloFpv app.
And most Flypads on the market are now several years old. I don't know if its still being manufactured

I looked on Amazon, and it has a listing for them, but not available...a lot of used ones, cheap on ebay so I think you are right that it is not available any more....let us know how it works out
