I have had more time to do some testing of the Tello with the TD1 controller in the house and outside in a variety of places and I think my problem has been Bluetooth interference. On the last few flights I have been making sure that Airplane mode is on on my iPhone and that all the Bluetooth devices are off. I also wait until the WiFi fields populate in the Tello app. I still sometimes have some momentary lag when I take off but if I hover for a minute it usually disappears.
