Yes, you can. The Xiaomi repeater is tricky to install but The Gadget Inspector has an excellent YouTube video which will walk you through the process.

I've seen in some videos that if you're using a bluetooth controller then it becomes critical to use an extender to eliminate interference

The gamesir t1d is really nice but for me a pain in the *** to connect. Regarding extender I have not noticed bluetooth drops anyway. And without don't know because the frame drops without extender was to much anyways even without bluetooth controller.
