Ok my son bought me a Gamesir T1 as a gift. It flies great but the video feed is basically non existent. I can take photos but sort of blindly as the lag is crazy. I've heard if I use an OTG cable directly into my phone from the T1 it may work. Has anyone tried this? Or did my son buy the wrong controller?

No, I think you got the right one. You got a nice son. I have never tried OTG on Tello

Update: my Tello recognises the controller as a T1s and since using the Mi wifi repeater my video is back and working fine. I bought a OTG cable but can't seem to get it connected to the Tello

For ryze to advertise the t1d which only connects through BT and not OTG is a scandal. They gotta know the BT interferes and should have OTG support on this controller. But oh well. It’s a young company right?
