With much research and gnashing of teeth I finally got this to work repeatedly.
I've seen a lot of threads, (forgot where) where a lot of people had similar problems.
So here's my solution.

So here's my solution.
- Put the Controller in Android mode by.....
- Pressing the power on button and the “A” button at the same time and hold for 2 seconds.
- The green android light on the controller will flash continuously (far left).
- Connect the phone and controller with the OTG cable. The android light will come on steady.. And the red light will flash.
- Turn on the drone and connect to its WI-FI from your phone.
- Start the Tello app.
- Check Settings / Controller to make sure the app is connected to the Controller.
- You’re good to go.
- Move the two joy sticks down at a 45 degree angle to each other to start the propellers.
